The Gift of Laughter

The gift of laughter

Let us thank God for the ability to laugh. In spite of what may be happening around us—whether challenges, uncertainty, or sorrow—if we can still find reasons to laugh and praise God, life is truly worth living.

Charlie Chaplin once said, “A day without laughter is a day wasted.” How true that is! Laughter is not just a reaction to something funny—it’s a declaration of hope. It’s a sign that even when things don’t go our way, we still believe that joy is possible. When we laugh, we choose to explore the world of optimistic possibilities. We decide to look beyond our circumstances and embrace the beauty of God’s goodness all around us.

Laughter reminds us that there is light in dark times, that healing can coexist with hurt, and that joy is not dependent on perfection. When we share a moment of humor, a lighthearted joke, or a deep roaring belly laugh with someone else, our burdens become lighter, our hearts open wider, and our souls are refreshed. It’s one of God’s simplest yet most powerful gifts—a bridge that connects us to one another and to Him.

Think of how laughter brings people together—families, friends, even strangers. It breaks down walls and reminds us of our shared humanity. Proverbs 17:22 tells us, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” God designed us to experience joy, to smile, to laugh, and to celebrate the life He’s given us.

So today, take a moment to laugh—really laugh during this Thanksgiving Season. Watch something funny, share a story, or just recall a joyful memory that makes you smile. Let that laughter rise up as an offering of praise to God, the giver of every good and perfect gift.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the ability to laugh. Thank You for moments of joy that lift our spirits and remind us of Your goodness. You said in Zephaniah 3:17, “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing.” Lord, thank You for showing us how to rejoice—even through laughter. May our joy be a reflection of Your presence in our lives, and may our laughter bring healing and hope to those around us. Amen.
